Some writing you might enjoy

It’s been a while since I sent one of these, but I’ve found my way back to writing again and, very on brand for me, it’s happening on a brand new blog I spun up on a whim. I wanted something fresh, free of old code and old context, so I made aurooba.blog, which I’ve called Working Notes.

I’ve been publishing there semi-regularly, and there's nine thoughtful posts so far, full of ideas that have been sitting in my head for months waiting to take shape. Consider this a quick hello to share some of that writing with you and to let you know I’ll probably be sending more from Working Notes your way soon.

Marketing Platform Engineering

This series feels like the most important thing I’ve written yet: it introduces and explores a discipline I believe deserves to be recognized and named. I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts once you’ve read it.

Stacking PRs Without Losing Your Mind (or Your Velocity)

A quick and light introduction to the stacking workflow, and my favorite tool for using it when you’re building a big, complex feature within a trunk-based development setup.

Learning to speak your organization’s language

As I’ve moved through companies of different sizes, I’ve learned a lot about how organizations speak, and how much that language shapes the work itself. This piece is the advice I wish I’d had when I first stepped into the world of “corporate” tech.

Why We Choose What We Build With

I was reading this blog post about how Motion was moving off of Typescript, and it sent me down a rabbit hole about how we choose the technologies we use in the first place. This post basically poured out of me after that.

Okay, that's all for now. Hopefully, you’ll start seeing me in your inbox about once a month again. :)

Issue # 20 my kid is one Today my kid is one. He’s graduated from newborn to some form of toddler. He can almost walk. He babbles and decisively calls me both amma and mamma, and he can do a million other things he couldn’t do just a year ago. I stopped writing this newsletter a little while ago, sort of abruptly. It was a mix of life getting in the way and me just not needing to anymore. Nineteen issues in, one day, something just sort of clicked. It was still hard, I was still tired, and I...

Issue # 19 this word leads to me We were practicing standing, like we often do. I offered him my fingers, he gripped them with his tiny hands, and pulled himself up, delighted with himself, delighted with me. And then, without warning, he said mamma. Not to me. Not looking at me. Just said it, like it had burst out of him. Like it had been sitting in his chest waiting for a way out. Something inside me froze, then warmed, then sparked. He doesn’t know I’m mamma yet. But he will. And something...

Issue # 18 after the baby..there was you. Last week, I wrote a letter to my pregnant self, the one trying to keep up with her old life while growing a whole new one. Now I’ve been thinking about the version of me who came next: postpartum me. A woman healing and adjusting and waking up each day to someone completely new, her baby, yes, but also herself. So here’s what I’d tell her now. Dear postpartum me, You don’t love him yet. And you knew that was likely to happen. You trust that love...
